A Message From the Principal of Riverdale Elementary School
by Carmela Vito Smith We have had some exciting events happen at Riverdale Elementary School during the past several weeks. We received a federal grant to reduce class size in grades 1 and 2. As a result, I have hired 5 additional teachers. Ms. Litsky and Ms. Lippincott have joined the first grade team where the average class size is now 16 students. Ms. Riley and Mr. Rokita have joined the second grade team; Mrs. Hawkins will arrive at the end of this month. Second grade classes will be approximately 17-18 students per teacher, which is much less than the 32-33 we previously had. Mr. Danny Glover, an actor who has starred in movies such as "Angels in the Outfield" and "Beloved," was a special guest at our school on Thursday, January 13. Mrs. Grier, a fourth grade teacher, arranged for Mr. Glover's visit because he is her brother! Mr. Glover visited our classes and spoke with our children about the importance of reading and working hard in school. He has done commercials and has been an advocate for literacy for many years. Substitute Teachers Needed - If you like children and have a high school diploma, you might wish to consider becoming a substitute teacher. Applications to substitute are available at any county school or you may contact the Substitute Office at 301-952-6181 for additional information. Giant Receipts - Just a reminder to continue to send in your Giant receipts. The collection box is located on a table in the school lobby. We will use our points to purchase additional equipment for recess and other materials for our instructional program. The deadline is coming soon and we want to get all of our receipts deposited. Thanks for your help. |
