Town History Center Committee Report December 2001 |
|
The Riverdale Park Town History Center Committee held its first meeting on Wednesday, October 17. Committee members discussed plans and drafted a mission statement for the Center. The mission statement is as follows: The Riverdale Park History Center and Archives' (RPHCA) purpose is to collect historical materials relating to the people and organizations and history and government of the Town of Riverdale Park, Maryland. These materials will be stored in an archival environment where they will be made available to individuals with interest in the history of the community. The collections will be open to all interested parties. The RPHCA will accept both original material and reproductions. The RPHCA is an archival collection so it will not collect artifacts or collectibles. The RPHCA will collect documentation relating to Town organizations and groups as well as its residents. If feasible, the RPHCA may institute an oral history program to record the recollections of individuals. The Committee, with the assistance of the Town Administrator and his staff, has ordered supplies and begun establishing procedures for the History Center. The Committee is seeking donations of the following equipment: 2-drawer file cabinet (preferably fireproof), computer (Pentium I or II), and printer (laser or desk jet). As soon as the necessary supplies and equipment are on the hand, the Town History Center Committee will begin accepting donations of archival records, manuscripts, publications, photographs, and electronic media that document the history of the Town, its residents, businesses, and organizations. The Committee is particularly interested in back issues of the various newspapers published in town such as the Riverdalian and the Riverdale Sentinel. The Committee also discussed holding an Open House in April on the anniversary of the Governor's signing of the Town's Charter. The next meeting of the Committee will be Wednesday, January 23 at 8:00 p.m. in the conference room at the Town Hall.
